Establishing a European Cooperative – European project management

As the lead project coordinator and managing director from 2012 to 2016, I designed and established the pan-European Center for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF) together with two of Europes biggest media houses Gruner + Jahr and Axel-Springer and with the support of all democratic groups in the European Parliament and the Media Foundation of Sparkasse Leipzig. The ECPMF brought together more than 20 European organizations to defend the freedom of the press.

The ECPMF is one of the first pan-European cooperatives (SCE) founded in Germany. The law firm CMS Hasche Sigle and the Cooperative Association of Germany accompanied the demanding start-up process. In the founding statutes of the ECPMF is recorded, amongst other important aspects, that each cooperative member has one vote. Be it the huge major corporation Gruner + Jahr or the small center for investigative journalism in Moldova.

Journalistic organizations, media companies, academic institutions, legal organizations and campaigning organizations from 16 European countries – including the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ); Index on Censorship; SCOOP; the Center for investigative journalism at the University of London; the University of Westminster; Journalists help Journalists; the Media Legal Defense Initiative; the Institute for European Media Law and many other journalist organizations and actors amongst others from Macedonia, the Netherlands, Belgium, Russia, Serbia, Switzerland, Austria and Italy are the founding members.
